One of the most amazing parts about losing weight without tracking your calories and macros is how connected you get to your body. While I love creating calorie and macro counts for clients to know exactly how much they need to be eating of every food and their total calories… There is something so great about not stressing about numbers when shedding weight.
That’s why I wanted to talk about how it was a blessing in disguise that I wasn’t tracking my calories or macros when I hit a plateau postpartum…
And it actually allowed me to get honest about what was actually holding me back from my dream body.
Here’s a personal story I haven’t shared with you before.
Around 7-8 months into my postpartum fitness journey after welcoming my baby girl into the world, I had lost a lot of weight – but I still had around 15-20 pounds to go. At this point I started to make some changes, but still just didn’t have the bandwidth to go full blown macro tracking queen again like I did when I was younger.
2 months later? I hadn’t lost more weight and realized whatever I was doing was not enough structure or discipline to work.
So what do I do as a Dietitian? I calculated my calories and macros, and thought maybe I should log my food… but every day I found myself swamped with work and so overwhelmed, resisting the idea of tracking.
I gave myself an ultimatum. I made some changes to how I was eating based upon my habits and reflections of my own diet and training in the gym. If 2 months from now I don’t see progress or feel better, I’d begin to log my food again.
And what did you know… a month later I ended up another 5 pounds down WITHOUT stressing about numbers or food logging. And then by 1 year postpartum, I had lost just about all of the 50 pounds I had gained.
You’re probably wondering… how did I do this?
It wasn’t just changes I made to my diet. Honestly?
I had to move from being interested in results… to being committed to the process.
